Wesley and Riker are two different facets of Mary Sue. Wesley is a child genius and all these other things (allegedly) but somehow always manages to do things stupidly and be an irritating twerp, where Riker is supposed to be a sex god and heroic leader Because The Writing Says So, and mostly just stares intently, acts “suave” and preens.

Subjectively, I find Wesley highly irritating, but I find Riker as a mostly ordinary guy going around *acting as if he is a Sex God* and people reacting like he really is to be hilarious.
